Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez has revealed the story of having almost joined English side Fulham when he was only a 16-years-old.
Saul has established himself as a very important player for Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid side in recent years and is currently considered one of the best midfielders in the world at the moment but things could have been very different for the Spaniard if a shock move to England had come into fruition.
Speaking with Daily Mail, the 22-year-old revealed about the preparations that had been made for his arrival to then Premier League side Fulham when he was only 16 and expressed his delight at not having completed the move.
He said, “Fulham wanted me when I was 16. They were in the Premier League at the time with Mark Hughes and I was close to going.
“They had a plan for me to train with them for three months and then to start playing directly. I could go from the Atletico B team to the Premier League. I felt ready to make that jump. Thank God I never went.”
