Liverpool FC lining up a move to bring back Alvaro Arbeloa

Liverpool have enjoyed a fantastic renaissance over the past few months and as a result, the Reds are right back into contention for a Champions League finish this season.

Despite Liverpool’s remarkable recovery though, they still have a couple of problem positions to rectify during the summer. The departure of long time captain Steven Gerrard means that manager Brendan Rodgers has a huge job on his hands to find a capable replacement for the Reds’ talisman.

Apart from Gerrard’s heir at Liverpool, Rodgers will also most likely have to add a defender to the ranks at Anfield and a new full back seems to be on the cards.

Regular right back, Glen Johnson, is all but certain to depart the club after refusing to sign an extension and as a result a host of right sided defenders have been linked with a move to Liverpool over the past few months.

Recently, it was claimed that the Reds were eyeing a move for Porto star Danilo but now according to reports emerging out of Spain – Liverpool want to re-sign former star Alvaro Arbeloa from Real Madrid.

Arbeloa spent two-and-a-half seasons at Liverpool before making a move to Madrid back in 2009. Since his switch to the Santiago Bernabeu, Arbeloa has played a key role in the Spanish giants’ success over the years.

In recent times though, Arbeloa has had first team football hard to come by following the emergence of Dani Carvajal and with the 32-year old’s contract at the Bernabeu set to expire at the end of next season, it is believed that Real Madrid are open to offloading the defender.

With Arbeloa seemingly being made available, Liverpool have reportedly expressed their interest in signing the defender. Despite his advancing years, Arbeloa has proven that he is still a top class player and the Spanish international would most certainly be a good replacement for the erratic Johnson.

However, the likes of Arsenal and Napoli are also said to be interested in Arbeloa and Liverpool have to fight off stiff competition in order to lure the defender back to Anfield.
