David Moyes’ reign as Manchester United was dealt another blow after the Red Devils were held to a 2-2 home draw by Premier League basement side Fulham. A huge sense of optimism had returned to the United camp after the record-breaking capture of Juan Mata but it has proven to be a false dawn with the Red Devils now having it all to do, if they are to salvage a Champions League spot, in what has been a horrendous season so far.
Although Moyes had insisted that he was confident that the signing of Mata would be a catalyst to turn his side’s flailing season around, it now seems like the Scotsman would have been better off if he had recruited a couple of more players along with the signing of the Spanish playmaker during the January transfer window.
It has now emerged that Moyes was in-fact looking to further strengthen his side after the addition of Mata by making an approach for Dutch star Wesley Sneijder, according to the player himself.
Sneijder had been constantly linked with a move to Old Trafford in the last couple of seasons and Moyes was said to be interested in signing the midfielder in January in order to add that bit of quality to the middle of the park ,which has been sorely missing during the current campaign.
However, the midfielder decided to snub United’s offer after revealing that he was happy at Galatasaray and had no reason to leave the club.
Sneijder said, “There were clubs who wanted to sign me like Manchester United but I have no intention of leaving and my club have no intention of letting me go. Leaving in January didn’t even cross my mind and the club have never told me to leave.
“There is still a lot to achieve here we are competing in the league, Turkish Cup and have a chance of beating Chelsea in the Champions League. I feel at home here and that’s not something you feel everywhere you go.”
United’s lack of creativity from central midfield was evident against Fulham, with the Red Devils largely relying only on crosses to create opportunities and Moyes could have certainly used the services of Sneijder last night.
