Championship outfit Newcastle United are plotting an ambitious swoop for Napoli superstar Dries Mertens, as reported by the Chronicle.
Newcastle United’s lead at the top of the Championship table was once again reduced following disappointing results against Reading and Fulham recently and the Magpies earning automatic promotion into the Premier League does not look so certain at the moment.
Despite the slip up though, many do expect Newcastle to get the job done by the end of the season and many reports have claimed that the Tyneside based outfit are already planning for life in the English top flight by looking at transfer targets for next season.
A host of names have been mentioned as potential candidates to arrive at St. James’ Park in the upcoming summer and now in shock reports from the Chronicle, revelations have been made that Newcastle are currently plotting a move to sign Napoli star Dries Mertens.
Mertens set for Newcastle move?
Mertens is arguably one of the best attacking players in Europe at the moment and the Belgian international has enjoyed a stunning campaign so far this term, scoring a sensational 24 goals as well as providing 11 assists in 35 appearances in all competitions from a wide position.
While Mertens is clearly a key player for Napoli, the attacker’s future at the club is in doubt due to the fact that he has not signed an extension with the Italian giants and a number of clubs are believed to be keen on making a swoop for the 29-year-old.
Surprisingly, even Newcastle’s name has been mentioned as one of the candidates and ridiculous as the links sound, the Magpies may stand a chance of signing the ex-PSV star as he shares a strong relationship with Rafael Benitez from their time together at Napoli a few years back.
Of course, Newcastle first need to ensure that they earn promotion into the Premier League for Mertens to even think about arriving at St. James’ Park.
