Sunderland AFC linked with a move for Italian international

Sunderland have been linked with a move for Inter Milan defender Andrea Ranocchia as they look to bolster their defence for the new Championship season.

Last season, the relegated side had the third worst defensive record in the Premier League and and they will be looking to correct their defensive shortcomings this season.

Ranocchia had an impressive loan spell for Hull City last season and as a result, the likes of Watford and West Brom have all join joined Sunderland in the pursuit of the Italian international.

With Inter Milan seemingly looking to offload the defender, it will be interesting to see which of the above mentioned clubs will be able to snap him up. So far, Watford look favourites to secure the towering 29-year-old’s signature.

The Black Cats have already have the likes of Lamine Kone and Papy Djilobodji on their books and they performed amicably in the season opener against Derby

However, the signing of Ranocchia will give Sunderland more depth and prepare them for the longer, more gruesome season in the Championship.

After years of flirting with relegation, Sunderland finally got relegated last season and considering last season’s performances, it will be difficult for the Wearside team to move back into the Premier League.
