When Wayne Rooney burst into the scene during the European Championship as a prodigious 17-year old, many had tipped the young man to become England’s savior and guide the Three Lions to victory in a major tournament for the first time since 1966.

However, since his heroics in Portugal more than a decade ago, Rooney has largely disappointed for England at the biggest stage and many have been left to wonder if the superstar of English football will ever deliver.

The World Cup in Brazil will arguably be Rooney’s last opportunity to impress at the World Cup and he will certainly be desperate to finally produce for the Three Lions.

Although his club Manchester United endured a torrid campaign, Rooney was in decent form scoring 17 goals and if England is to do well, the talisman of English football will undoubtedly have to be in top form.

While much of England’s goalscoring responsibility laid solely on Wayne Rooney’s shoulders in previous tournaments, the Three Lions now possess perhaps an equally accomplished striker in their side in the form of Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge.

The 24-year old was always regarded as a talented player but during the current campaign, Sturridge has transformed into a world class player who is capable of producing consistently at the highest level.

His 22 goals nearly handed Liverpool the title this season and if he is able to transmit his club form into the World cup, England will surely do well in the competition.

Much of England’s success under Roy Hodgson has been down to a miserly defence and it was evident during the qualification rounds, where the Three Lions conceded only 4 goals.

The England defence has been solid as it has ever been in recent years and a lot of credit for England’s fine record at the back has to go down to goalkeeper Joe Hart.

It has certainly not been a vintage campaign for Hart at club level at Manchester City, where he was dropped after a couple of high profile blunders. However, the 27-year old came back stronger to guide the Citizens to the title and is probably in the form of his life.

There is no doubting that Hart is a world class custodian and he will be vital to England’s chances in Brazil.
