Javad Nekounam is the captain and the most experienced player of the Iranian National team. A veteran of over 100 caps for Iran, the 33-year old enjoyed an accomplish career in Europe with Spanish side Osasuna for whom he amassed over 150 appearances during a six-year spell.

An energetic midfielder, Nekounam provides the legs in the Iranian midfield alongside Andranik Teymourian and is a good source of goals as well, having managed to find the net on 37 occasions for his national team.

Despite his advancing years, Nekounam is the undoubted star of the Iran side and he will need to provide the inspiration if his side are to make it to the knock out stage of the competition.

Having moved from Iran to Germany at the age of one, Ashkan Dejagah donned the colours of the European nation at youth level. However, the midfielder had refused to play for the German national team and had even expressed reservations about representing Iran.

But, manager Carlos Queiroz eventually managed to convince the winger to play for the Iranian national team and he has since played a crucial part in the Asian giant’s qualification to the World Cup.

A tricky player who has a terrific eye for goal, Dejagah is certainly an asset for Iran. The 27-year old has played at the highest level in Europe all his life and his quality as well as experience will be very important at the World Cup.

Another player that Carlos Queiroz managed to convince to turn out for Iran, Reza Ghoochannejhad has become a key figure for the Asian side. The 26-year old represented Netherlands at youth level but since his debut for the Iran national team back in September 2012, the striker has been in sensational form.

Having scored 9 goals in just 11 appearances, Ghoochannejhad was arguably Iran most important player during the qualifiers and it was his goal against South Korea which sealed the Persian Stars’ place in Brazil.

Ghoochannejhad provides the cutting edge for Iran in attack and he will undoubtedly be crucial for his side at the World Cup.
