While the all conquering Spanish National team had very few weaknesses, one area which perhaps needed improvement was in the attacking department. However, when Diego Costa decided to switch allegiances from Brazil to Spain last year, La Roja had been gifted arguably the finest striker in the world.

Costa’s decision to turn his back on Brazil was vehemently criticized but Spain certainly do not care and have welcomed the 25-year old to the National team with open arms.

Although Costa has made only one appearance for Spain so far, the striker’s credentials cannot be doubted. Tall, powerful and a predator in front of goal, it was largely Costa’s goals that propelled Atletico Madrid to the La Liga title as well as the final of the UEFA Champions League and he will surely be leading the line for Spain during the World Cup.

There have been concerns raised about his fitness though as he limped off against Barcelona in the final game of La Liga but it is believed that the 25-year old will be fit in time for the World Cup and it is just frightening to think what Spain can go on to achieve with the Atletico superstar in their side.

Arguably the best midfielder of his generation, Xavi Hernandez is the player who makes Spain tick. There is perhaps no better midfield player in the world, who is able to dictate the pace of the game as well as Xavi does and in a Spanish side which base their game on possession football, the 34-year old is the lynchpin.

The Barcelona star’s vision, passing range and technique is exemplary and his importance to Spain cannot be stated enough. While Xavi did not enjoy the best of campaigns with Barcelona this season, he will undoubtedly be looking to cap off the campaign with another World Cup winners medal to his name.

Another experienced head in the Spanish national team, Andres Iniesta is the creative hub for the La Roja. It was his iconic goal in South Africa four years ago which handed Spain their first World Cup victory and the midfielder’s name has already gone down in Spanish folklore as a legend.

Iniesta is a classy player who has brilliant close control, dribbling ability and a wonderful vision. The midfielder seems to float around the football pitch and when in full flow, Iniesta is just a joy to watch. If Spain are going to defend their title in Brazil, Iniesta will undoubtedly have to strut his magic and inspire his side to victory.
