QPR will launch an approach for Defoe in January confirms Redknapp

Queens Park Rangers certainly enjoyed a fruitful transfer window as they were able to strengthen their side by recruiting no less than nine top class players over the summer and as a result, the Hoops look like they will have no problems whatsoever in avoiding relegation this season.

However, one criticism of the Hoops’ business during the window was the fact that they were not able to bring in a replacement to negate the loss of Loic Remy, who left for Chelsea just two days before the deadline day.

Losing Remy late into deadline day was a big blow for QPR

It was widely reported that QPR boss Harry Redknapp was moving frantically on Monday in his hopes of signing a new striker, with Toronto star Jermain Defoe being mooted to rejoin his former boss at Loftus Road.

At the end though, the transfer did not come into fruition and many fear that the Hoops’ lack of firepower upfront could prove to be their Achilles Heel.

Now, Redknapp has gone on to confirm that he did in fact make an approach for Defoe and had even reached an agreement with Toronto. But the 67-year old went on to explained that the move did not take place as the MLS side were not ready to part with the England international before January and consequently, QPR decided to back out of the deal at the last minute.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Redknapp revealed, “We tried all day with Jermain Defoe. He was keen to come. We agreed a deal with Toronto but they wouldn’t release him now.

“We could do a deal and then take him in January but we wanted to get someone in today.”

Despite the setback though, Redknapp stated that he is still interested in reuniting with Defoe and confirmed that he will launch another approach for the striker in January.

Redknapp continued, “There is every chance he will come in January. I’m a big fan of Jermain’s. Almost certainly, I think we will [go back in for him]. I’ve signed him so many times. I’ve taken him everywhere.”

Redknapp was the man who handed Defoe his big break at West Ham United over 15 years ago and the two certainly share a good relationship after having worked together at various clubs.
