While Swansea City’s victory over Manchester United was certainly the shock result of the first week of the Premier League campaign, Aston Villa’s away victory over Stoke City was also one of the big surprises of the opening weekend.

Although the win for Villa is certainly a big boost, they are widely expected to struggle this season due to the seemingly lack of quality of present in their side.

Despite enduring a torrid season last year, Villa were very quiet in the transfer market due to the ownership of the club being in doubt and as a result, manager Paul Lambert has had his hands a bit tied up this summer in his attempt to strengthen the squad at his disposal.

However, Lambert seems to have been finally given a bit of freedom to spend recently as evidenced by the signing of Colombian midfielder Carlos Sanchez and now it can be revealed that the Scotsman is looking to further bolster his side by acquiring the services of Argentina star Sebastian Blanco.

Sebastian Blanco2Lambert has set his sights on signing Blanco

Lambert is said to be looking to table a bid for Blanco in the coming days and is hopeful of securing the services of the attacking midfielder before the end of the month.

Blanco currently plies his trade for Metalist Kharkiv and has been one of the stars for the Ukrainian side since his arrival to the club back in 2011.

While Metalist will certainly be reluctant to part with their star man, Villa are confident of luring the 26-year old to Villa Park due to the fact that his contract with the Ukrainian side is set to expire at the end of the season.

A tricky player with a low centre of gravity, Blanco will add flair to the Villa lineup and could prove to be a big player for Lambert if indeed he does arrive.

Aston Villa will now welcome Newcastle United to Villa Park on Saturday in their first home game of the season.
