Swansea City AFC plan a move for Mario Gomez

Premier League side Swansea City are plotting an ambitious move to sign German international Mario Gomez

Not too long ago, Mario Gomez was considered one of the best strikers in Europe but things have gone pear terribly shaped for the German international ever since his move to Italian side Fiorentina back in 2013.

In two seasons at Florence, Gomez has managed only 7 goals in 29 league appearances and the striker looks a shadow of the player he once was. Admittedly, Gomez has struggled with persistent injuries but it is clear to see that he has become a peripheral figure at Fiorentina under manager Vincenzo Montella.

Therefore, it is widely expected that Fiorentina will be looking to offload Gomez this summer and a move back to Germany has been touted for the 29-year old.

Now according to reports emerging out of Italy though, it has been claimed that a surprise move to Premier League side Swansea City also remains a viable option for Gomez.

Mario Gomez a shock target for Swansea City

Swansea have still not managed to sufficiently replace star man Wilfried Bony following his sale to Manchester City during the January transfer window last season and with Nelson Oliveira failing to impress, signing a new striker is high on the priority list for manager Garry Monk.

Gomez had been linked with a move to the Liberty Stadium last season as well and it has now been claimed that Monk is looking to revive his interest in the striker during the summer.

Swansea will have to break their tight wage budget in order to be able to afford Gomez but it is believed that the club are willing to make an exception due to the fantastic goalscoring reputation of the striker.

While on paper the move for Gomez certainly looks like an attractive one, it would represent a bit of a risk for Swansea as the striker still has not proved his fitness as of yet and paying big money for him could well backfire.
