Southampton have beaten Newcastle United to the signature of French attacking midfielder Henri Saivet, according to reports
Given Newcastle United’s struggles so far, it is widely expected that manager Steve McClaren will be looking to strengthen his ranks during the January transfer window as the threat of relegation looms large on the Magpies.
Reports emerging out of France had claimed that Newcastle had moved quickly in their pursuit for a new player upon the reopening of the January transfer window by agreeing a deal to sign Bordeaux attacking midfielder Henri Saivet.
Contrary to the reports though, Newcastle have not yet agreed a deal for Saivet and now have reportedly been given a huge blow in their hopes of signing the Frenchman.
According to reports, Premier League rivals Southampton have now swooped ahead of Newcastle in the race for Saivet and are now in pole position to secure the services of the 25-year old.
It has been claimed that Saivet prefers a move to the South Coast of England rather than the North East and as a result, has decided that he wants to join Southampton instead of Newcastle.
